About Us

Our Mission

Appalachian Firsts empowers first-generation college students in Appalachia through providing them with mentorship and scholarship opportunities that support them from the start of college into their careers. Here, no one goes first alone.

Our Impact

Scholarship Opportunities

Appalachian Firsts has partnered with West Virginia University to create an endowment fund benefiting first-generation college students. Visit our Learn More page to seek more information about making a tax deductible donation directly to the fund.

Mentorship Opportunities

Appalachian Firsts connects first gens with local professionals for mentorship opportunities. Use our Contact Us page to learn more about becoming a mentor.

Statistics

As of 2020:

54% of undergraduate students had parents without a bachelor’s degree.

26% of undergraduate students had parents with no postsecondary education.

60% of undergraduate students who had parents without a bachelor’s degree were also the first in their family to attend college.

Emily Renzelli

Emily Renzelli is an attorney, advocate, and proud West Virginian. A first-generation college graduate herself, she started Appalachian Firsts with a mission to help other first gens reach new heights.
